Château Monbrison

Robert Meacham Davis, an American minister and commissioner of the American Red Cross, acquired Monbrison in 1922. After marrying Kathleen Johnston, they had three daughters. Elizabeth, the youngest, decided to take over the running of the estate in 1955. Together with her husband, Christian Vonderheyden, they revived the vineyard, which had been abandoned in the 1930s. In 1963, they planted 12 hectares of vines around the house. The couple had three sons. The second son, Jean Luc Vonderheyden, a leading winemaking expert of the 1980s, took up the mantle until his tragic death in 1992. His passion and talent contributed to the quality of the wines. Since then, Laurent, the youngest son, who had been living in the United States, returned to his village in the Médoc to manage the family estate. He played a key role in Monbrison’s recognition and commercial growth worldwide. Alix, with deep family ties to Monbrison, joined her father Laurent in 2019, bringing passion and conviction to support him in managing the estate. Together, they ensure the vineyard adapts to climatic and ecological challenges. Planted in 1963, every vine has a story to tell. To ensure this story continues, we plant our plots using our mass selection.
