In 1878, the Château won its first gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Since then, this distinction has been confirmed in every decade: the excellence has been maintained and it is known as one of the most consistent wines in the world by wine merchants and enlightened wine lovers alike. Cheval Blanc became a member of the prestigious and coveted ‘Club des 9’, which brings together the best of the best in Bordeaux.
The torch was passed in autumn 1998. Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frère breathed new life into Cheval Blanc, respecting its history and heritage and placing renewed trust in its Managing Director, Pierre Lurton. Today, the quest for perfect quality is part of an ongoing process that combines a culture of detail and a quest for precision. This dynamic is resolutely forward-looking.
In 2011, Christian de Portzamparc, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, designed a winery as an extension to the château. True to the wishes of Baron Albert Frère and Bernard Arnault, this building is a harbinger of things to come, while blending seamlessly into the historic landscape that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
And so, for six centuries, winegrowers have succeeded one another on the land of Cheval Blanc, a 2000-year-old ‘civilisation of the vine’
